Carrefour sales in Romania rose by 18% last year, almost as the result reported on the Polish market | Progresiv
French retailer Carrefour posted a record 18% rise in Romanian business last year, to 1.781 billion euros, a result close to the figures recorded in Poland, according to the company's financial report.
Carrefour's business rose from 1.5 billion euros in 2016 to 1,781 billion euros last year. For comparison, Carrefour registered a turnover of 1.785 billion euros in Poland. Currently, Romania is the sixth market of European importance after France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Poland.
At the end of last year, Carrefour owned a chain of 323 stores in Romania, including 33 hypermarkets, 237 supermarkets and 53 proximity stores.
At group level, Carrefour reported a slowdown in growth, from 3% in 2016 to 1.6% last year. Sales totaled 78.9 billion euros. Instead, the French retailer reported a negative result of 531 million euros, from a profit of 746 million euros in 2016.
The results demonstrate the need for rapid implementation of the company's transformation plan. With this plan, whose ambition is to turn Carrefour into the leader in food retail and create an omnichannel reference universe, the group resumed the offensive and is investing in growth, according to Carrefour President and CEO Alexandre Bompard.
