ROMANIA: Stores could be forced to sell mainly Romanian fruits, vegetables and meat | Progresiv
The share of Romanian meat, fruits and vegetables in grocery stores will have to be at least 51%, according to a bill adopted by the Senate, which belongs to PSD senator Ovidiu Dontu.
Stores that do not comply with the law risk fines from 25,000 to 50,000 lei. The project will go to the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decisional chamber in this bill’s case.
"Traders legal persons authorized to carry out selling activities for foods are obliged that for the categories: meat, vegetables and fruits to purchase these products in a share of at least 51% corresponding to each category, from the short food chain, as defined by the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union", reads the bill adopted by the Senate.
The short food chain is "a supply chain involving a limited number of traders engaged in cooperation and local economic development as well as geographical relations and tight social links between producers and consumers" reads the report of the Economic Committee in the Senate.
The project allows traders to sell during winter vegetables and fruits in a share of 70% foreign. On the other hand, the bill does not take into consideration the specialized stores selling mainly imported food products. However, if the law enters into force, the price of fruits and vegetables could rise when yields are low in Romania.
