ROMANIA: Another retail exit from Pitesti – after Mega Image, Succes also closes its stores | Progresiv
Romanian retail chain Succes has recently closed all its stores in Pitesti, citing "economic issues". The retailer operated for over three years in this market, its most important store being the Succes hypermarket from the city entrance. Opened in 2011, the hypermarkets had previously been operated by another local chain, Pic, owned by the Penescu brothers.
Two months ago, Mega Image chain announced its withdrawal from the market in Pitesti, giving up the four locations where it operated two Mega Image supermarkets and two Shop & Go convenience stores. The chain, owned by Belgian retailer Delhaize Group, motivated the decision noting that the sales of the four units did not sustain the commercial activity in this city.
Succes Nic Com - company headquartered in Targu Jiu and that operates the Succes chain for over 20 years - is insolvent since February 2015. So far, it has closed some more stores, both in Targu Jiu and surroundings and in Bucharest, especially of the small format. Meanwhile, the stores that are still operational have supply problems.
Curently, Succes has only one hypermarket in Craiova, inaugurated in 2011 also in a former Pic store location. In the supermarket segment there are multiple units operating in Targu Jiu and localities in Gorj and neighboring counties.
Until last year, Succes was the largest local retailer in Romania, with about 180 units (supermarkets, self-service or counter-serving stores, butcher shops, wholesale stores) operational in 2013.
