REGION: Kaufland Romania ascends in the regional retailers’ hierarchy | Progresiv
Kaufland Romania stores chain climbed three positions among the major retail chains in Central and Eastern Europe ranking, conducted by audit and consultancy company Deloitte, holding the 13th position base on its turnover of 1.8 billion euros reported in 2014. 
In the first 20 positions among regional retailers, Kaufland Romania is the only local presence, the ranking still being dominated by Polish companies with nine presences.
Biedronka retail chian, controlled by the Portuguese group Jeronimo Martins, ranks first, with a turnover of 8.56 billion euros, up by 10% compared to 2013, while in second place is Polish company Eurocash, taken over by management from its former shareholder, Jeronimo Martins.
The other seven Polish companies in top 20 are subsidiaries of large retail groups in Western Europe (Lidl, Tesco, Carrefour, Kaufland, Auchan, Metro).
Romanian store chains climb in the ranking
This year's edition of the Deloitte Central Europe Top 500, with the most powerful companies in the region based on the turnover from 2014, marked a rise for the Romanian retail chains in the hierarchy.
Kaufland climbed 20 positions, from 101 to 81st and Carrefour reaches 183, up by 17 positions. Although with a falling turnover, Metro Cash & Carry Romania managed to climb seven positions, to 190. Following the takeover of Real hypermarkets from Metro, Auchan Romania climbed from position 454 to 237.
With a turnover of 788.7 million euros in 2014, up by 12.3% from the previous year, Lidl Romania climbed 53 places to 264 in Deloitte’s ranking. The most spectacular advance was recorded by Mega Image chain, which climbed more than 100 places to 340, while Rewe (Romania) climbed 56 places.
