Metro’s Spanish distribution division, Makro, wants "to obtain liquidity to make new investments and projects" and is analyzing the sale of several facilities in Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Badalona, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Alicante.
Sources of the company have confirmed – as mentioned by newspaper Expansion - that the operation would consist of a sale of the buildings with subsequent lease.
The company, specialized in wholesale distribution to the hospitality industry, already came off under the same formula of three of its centers in Madrid (Barajas, Paseo Imperial and Alcobendas), and in Spain it currently operates 37 establishments in fifteen provinces.
Currently, its managers are studying the possibility of undertaking a "similar" process with the Makro of Palma de Mallorca , Badalona , Bilbao, Valencia (the polygon Vara de Quart), Zaragoza and Alicante.
A spokesman for the company has stated that this formula is used by other large companies and arises with the purpose of taking advantage of the favorable moment of the real estate market.
He also stressed that at the operational level does not mean changes and that the maintenance of its premises in Spain is not in question.
Makro is the Spanish subsidiary of the German group Metro, has more than 900,000 customers and in its fiscal year 2017-2018 recorded sales worth 1,231 million euros, 1% less than a year before according to data provided by the company itself. (www.lasprovincias.es)
