Lidl lays foundation for return to Latvia | Progresiv
In a ceremony attended by the Latvian economy minister, the German ambassador and the mayor of Riga, the first stone was laid for a new 55 million euros Lidl DC in Riga. The 47,000 sq m facility will be one of the most technologically advanced logistics hubs in the Baltic states and is scheduled to go live in 2020.
Radostin Roussev-Peine, head of Lidl Lithuania, stated that Lidl had to pursue expansion in Latvia. "We want to offer Latvian goods at the best prices, and the logistics centre will become the heart of the Lidl network in Latvia," he told attendees.
Lidl originally planned Baltic expansion in 2003, but scrapped plans in the face of an economic downturn. It subsequently revived the project with entry into Lithuania in 2016 and now operates 37 stores in the country. (www.kantarretailiq.com)
