Carrefour agrees to eliminate plastic packaging by 2025 | Progresiv
Carrefour has joined an existing agreement that will see it phase out plastic packaging from its products by 2025.
The group signed a national pact by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, which offers a concrete action plan designed to “help citizen-consumers and create a more sustainable future”.
The deal has seen Carrefour agree to replace (in 2019) the traditional polystyrene trays used in the cheese section with cardboard trays, which it said will eliminate 111 tonnes of plastic. Also in 2019, the group will no longer package organic fair-trade bananas in plastic sachets, saving at least 23 tonnes of plastic every year. Additionally, Carrefour will eliminate the plastic films that are used to cover cucumbers, which will eliminate 6.5 tonnes annually.
From March 2020, Carrefour will allow its customers to bring their own containers to buy products from the fish, butchery/cooked meats, cheese, delicatessen, and pastry counters. This is in addition to customers being able to purchase and reuse organic cotton bags for carrying their fresh produce.
The agreement has been previously signed by the likes of Auchan, Biscuits Bouvard, Coca-Cola European Partners, Danone, Nestlé, L´Oréal, Système U, Unilever, and WWF France. (www.kamcity.com)
