Lidl to ramp up store openings in Denmark | Progresiv
Discounter Lidl is to ramp up its presence in Denmark, with some 103 outlets set to open in the country over the coming years, according to media reports.
News portal Fødevarewatch reported that the company will invest around one billion kroner in its expansion plans this year, with around 10 to 15 stores to open in 2019.
“Our main focus is on Aarhus and Copenhagen,” Dirk Fust, director of Lidl Denmark, said in an interview with Fødevarewatch, adding that the group sees potential for as many as 60 to 80 stores in the Copenhagen region.
"That’s a big challenge, and it costs a lot of money to open a store in Copenhagen,” Fust added.
The move is likely to raise competition for rival discounter Netto, which operates 100 stores in the Copenhagen region, and 500 across Denmark as a whole.
Lidl has been present in the Danish market since 2005. (www.esmmagazine.com)
