UK: Tesco extends Scan as you Shop service | Progresiv
Tesco rolls out its Scan as you Shop service to a further 20 stores in a move that will help customers to save time at the checkout. Tesco's Scan as you Shop service, which was first introduced in 2012, is now available in 350 stores across the UK. The expansion of the service, which integrates self-service checkouts as well as manned ones, means that Tesco has more stores offering the scan and shop service than any other retailer.
The service, in which shoppers use hand-held scanners to scan products as they walk through store, saves checkout time and can avoid overspending. A Tesco spokesperson said:"We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to shop with us. Scan as you shop is already used by over 600,000 customers every week, and not only saves time at the checkout, it enables customers to track their spend as they go, too. This new trial will mean more customers than ever before can benefit from the service and check out in a matter of seconds."
Smartphone scan
Long shopping lines are a key deterrent in bricks and mortar food shopping, with the focus on making in-store shopping as quick and convenient as possible. Smartphone scan and go technology is now taking off around the world as it can cut out check out queues all together. In the UK, Waitrose is the first retailer to roll out a 'scan as you shop' mobile app. The Quick Check app replicates the handheld scanners previously used, meaning customers still need to pay at the till.
