UK: Tesco and Sainsbury’s abandon Click & Collect on the tube | Progresiv
Tesco and Sainsbury’s have withdrawn from their partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to operate remote click & collect services from tube station car parks following a trial period. It is anticipated that Asda, Waitrose and Ocado will continue with the scheme for now.
Tesco offered the click & collect service from ten station car parks and Sainsbury’s had a trial at seven London underground stations. It appears that the scheme had low uptake for the costs involved. Insiders suggested that the service was being used by people driving to the car parks in their vehicle more than by commuters on their way home from work, which makes a store-based scheme more effective.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “Our London customers have told us they prefer the Click & Collect service at our stores and online grocery shopping.”
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “Although it was popular in some areas, it wasn’t used in others as much as we’d like, so we’re now focused on rolling out a grocery click & collect service in our stores across the country.” (www.retailanalysis.igd.com)
