Tesco Poland to close five more big-box outlets | Progresiv
Tesco plans to shutter another five compact hypermarkets in Poland. From February to April 2020, stores in Leszno, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Lomza, Belchatów and Wroclaw will close their doors with the loss of 380 jobs.
The closures are in addition to those announced in 2019 as the UK retailer struggles to sustain like-for-like growth in the market. Unions were informed of the plans in a letter sent on 10 January. According to the letter, the rationale was that the compact big-box format proved unsustainable.
Reports suggest Carrefour has already submitted a bid for the location in Wroclaw. UOKiK received an application regarding the acquisition by Carrefour Polska of some of Kasama Investments' property . If the antitrust authority consents to concentration, then the Carrefour chain store will operate in the place of the closed Tesco hypermarket in CH Magnolia Park. (www.kantarretailiq.com)
