Russian retailer X5 Retail Group has installed 67 self-checkout terminals in 11 Pyaterochka stores as part of a pilot project aimed at improving customer experience. Russia's X5 Retail Group pilot tests self-checkout service

The self-checkout system has been developed by X5 Retail Group and will provide a cost-effective solution compared to similar systems sourced from third-party suppliers, the retailer said.

X5's self-checkout system comprises a high-quality 22.5” full HD multi-touch screen, a large 2D scanner for reading barcodes of various types, stereo speakers, a microphone for sound-based applications and voice services, and a 3D camera.

It is not equipped with banknote acceptors, making it apt for speedy processing of cashless payments, the retailer said.

Ivan Melnik, innovations director at Х5 Retail Group, said, "Thousands of Pyaterochka shoppers can already enjoy the experience of using the new self-checkout machine, which significantly speeds up purchases, reduces queues, and improves checkout efficiency.

"It is an easily scalable solution that makes for an overall better store environment: it takes [fewer] resources to service more shoppers, who end up saving time and enjoying their purchase more."

A set of four to six of X5's self-service machines occupy the same amount of space as one traditional checkout, and handle up to 30% of store traffic.

A single employee can supervise the operation of several self-checkout devices, assisting customers at several stages during the purchasing process, X5 added.

The retail giant aims to integrate a weighing platform to the checkout terminal and install a software that will speed up QR code payments.

It can also be upgraded to facilitate face ID purchases, and as well as personalised interactions, advertising, promotional offers based on individual shopping history.

After the pilot phase, which is scheduled to run until 30 September, X5 will evaluate customer feedback to include new features before introducing it in other stores. (www.esmmagazine.com)
