ROMANIA: The Parliament adopted a new bill on milk labeling | Progresiv
The origin of milk and percentage of powder milk within products will be included on the label of drinking milk, according to a bill adopted by Parliament on April 6th 2016.
The mandatory information to be printed on the label, in the field of vision, are:
a) name of the food product;
b) list of ingredients used;
c) net quantity of the food product;
d) durability or use by date;
e) any special storage conditions and / or conditions of use;
f) country of origin and place of origin of the raw milk;
g) name of the packer or identification mark;
h) name, business name and address of processor of the milk for consumption;
i) nutrition declaration;
j) fat content expressed as percentage;
k) heat treatment process used, pasteurized, sterilized, UHT.
Also under the new law, the right to include on the label of the finished product the mention "natural product" will be mandatory only to those who use 100% of raw milk derived from cows, buffalos, sheep and goats without having in composition powder milk or milk substitutes. And the right to mention on the product’s label "Romanian product" will be mandatory only to those using 100% raw milk as raw material coming from Romanian farms.
The penalties for those who do not comply with the above provisions are between 15,000 lei and 25,000 lei and also state authorities may withdraw the authorization of the manufacturers or traders for a period of six months.
The bill in its current form will be sent for promulgation to the President of Romania and subsequently will be published in the Official Monitor. It will come into force after its publication in the Monitor.
