ROMANIA: Modern retail openings in May | Progresiv
International chains have continued their expansion plans and in May as well, 15 commercial units being inaugurated. Regarding the format, the supermarket remains the stars of this month’s openings. 
The first position among the most expansive retailers is occupied by Profi, which marked nine openings. In second place stands Carrefour, with three units opened, while the third position is occupied by Belgian retailer Mega Image who opened two new locations that. Also, Lidl continued its investments in Romania by opening a new store built in Otopeni, Ilfov County.
Of the nine units Profi inaugurated, four operate in standard format, four in the proxomity format and one in the Profi Mini test format. With these openings, the national chain operated by the retailer controlled by investment fund Enterprise Investors has exceeded 300 units. Profi currently has 303 stores in 144 localities.
The French from Carrefour have met their expansion plans, opening three supermarkets. The retailer has opened one new store in Bucharest and Brasov, and its first store in Sibiu. With these openings, Carrefour Market chain expanded to 96 units.
Mega Image Belgian retailer opened two units in the Capital: a Mega Image supermarket and a convenience store under the Shop & Go banner. Currently, Mega Image operates 417 stores, mostly located in Bucharest, under the Mega Image (203), Shop&Go (211) and AB Cool Food (1), Gusturi Romanesti (1) and Mega Drive (1) banners.
Also, as of June 1st, Cora hypermarkets chain, owned by French-Belgian group Louis Delhaize, closed the hypermarket operated in Galleria Arad shopping center.
