ROMANIA: Modern retail openings in May | Progresiv
International retailers have continued their investments in expansion, in May being inaugurated 17 commercial units. The champion of openings is again Profi, who marked 10 new stores, followed by Mega Image with 5 units. In third place are Lidl and Selgros, each inaugurating one store.
Of the ten locations inaugurated by Profi, five of them operate in the standard format, four in Profi City proximity format and one under the Loco banner. With these openings, the retailer owned by Polish investment fund Enterprise Investors has reached the threshold of 401 business units operated in 191 localities nationwide.
Belgian retailer Mega Image concentrated on expanding the proximity chain, opening four stores under the Shop&Go banner and one Mega Image supermarket. Thus, Mega Image currently owns 477 stores operated under the Mega Image, Shop&Go and Gusturi Romanesti (Romanian Tastes) banners.
Lidl, part of German group Schwarz, continued its investments in Romania by opening a store in Targu Mures, reaching a chain of 195 units operated nationwide. This is the third opening the retailer marks since the beginning of the year, while the announced target for 2016 is of 10 new stores.
Selgros also opened a store in Targu Mures, the chain’s 20th, this being the first inauguration in four years. Moreover, the retailer has resumed its expansion plans with a new concept – a compact store format, which is a novelty not only locally but also at group level.
