ROMANIA: Modern retail openings in June | Progresiv
In June, international retail chains continued their investments in expansion, 22 commercial units being inaugurated. From the beginning of the year until now, June was the month when retailers have marked most openings, given that in the first half of the year were opened 73 stores in total. Regarding sales channels, June’s star in terms of openings was the proximity format.
The first position among the most expansive retailers belongs to Profi, which opened 11 units. In second place is Mega Image which marked eight openings and the third position is occupied by French retailer Carrefour with three new units. Also, Billa has resumed expanding, opening a supermarket in Gara de Nord.
Of the 11 units inaugurated by Profi, 7 operate in standard format, 2 in the Profi City proximity format and 2 Mini Profi test format. With these openings, the national chain operated by the retailer controlled by investment fund Enterprise Investors reached 314 stores.
Belgian retailer Mega Image focused its investments in June on the expansion of Shop & Go proximity chain in the Capital, the 8 units inaugurated being opened in Bucharest, under the Shop & Go banner. In addition, the retailer announced it will close all the stores it operates in Pitesti. Currently, Mega Image operates 417 stores, mostly located in Bucharest, under the Mega Image (203), Shop & Go (220) and AB Cool Food (1), Gusturi Romanesti (1) Mega Drive (1) banners.
Carrefour fulfilled its expansion plans and opened a new supermarket in Bucharest. With this opening, the French supermarket chain reached 96 units. In addition, the French have resumed the expansion plants of Express chain by integrating a convenience store operated in franchise, in Brasov: Express RostCom.
