ROMANIA: Mega Image to open its first stores in Cluj-Napoca city in 2017 | Progresiv
Mega Image, the number one food retail chain in Bucharest, is planning its launch in Cluj-Napoca, one of the Top 5 largest cities in Romania. Vassilis Stavrou, the General Manager of Mega Image Romania, confirmed this information for Progressive magazine: “We have already contracted several locations in Cluj-Napoca, but we will open the first Mega Image stores in this city in 2017”.
This move is part of the retailer’s plan to expand nationwide, after reaching 28% market share in Bucharest. In the Romanian capital, Mega Image is currently the largest supermarkets chain, with 430 operational stores. Outside Bucharest, it reached by now only 3 major cities: Constanta, Brasov and Ploiesti.
At the end of September, the retailer is set to inaugurate its third logistic center in Romania, at Stefanesti, near Bucharest. This project totalized 22 million euro investments from Delhaize Group (the actual Ahold-Delhaize company).
Regarding the impact of Ahold-Delhaize merger, Vassilis Stavrou mentioned that there will not be major changes in Mega Image Romania business strategy.
“Ahold-Delhaize currently operates 22 retail brands in 11 countries and its strategy is focused on developing local brands (such as Mega Image – n.r.). We will further develop the local retail chain and continue our partnership with local producers for offering local products to the Romanian consumers”, Stavrou stated.
