ROMANIA: Carrefour to buy supermarket chain Billa | Progresiv
French supermarket operator Carrefour said it has agreed to buy Romanian supermarket chain Billa Romania from Germany's Rewe Group. With the acquisition, Carrefour will add 86 stores in a country where it already operates 106 supermarkets, but also hypermarkets and proximity stores.
According to Romanian media reports, Carrefour paid almost 100 million euros for Billa supermarkets.
Spread over the entire Romanian territory, the 86 supermarkets of Billa Romania have a total sales area of 83,000 square meters.
The completion of this transaction remains subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities.
Carrefour is one of the biggest retailers in Europe, employing more than 380,000 people. With 12,000 stores in 35 countries, the group generated revenues of €100.5 billion in 2014.
