ROMANIA: Beer consumption dropped by about 9% in 2014 | Progresiv
The Romanian beer market registered last year a decrease of 8.6% compared to 2013, reaching 14.9 million hectoliters of sales volume, which is the second consecutive year of decline, announced the Romanian Brewers Association. The per capita consumption also decreased, reaching 74 liters last year compared to 2013, when Romanians consumed around 81 liters.
The main reason for the contraction of the market is the tax burden, according to Lucian Ghinea, President of Romanian Brewers Association.
Regarding the beer exports, they fell to 0.05 million hectoliters in 2014, the export volume reaching 0.3 million hectoliters in 2014. Imports also recorded a decline, reaching 0.3 million hectoliters last year. The beer market contraction in 2014 led to a decrease of 2 million euros of the investments made by members of the Association, which reached 60 million euros.
