Lidl UK moves nearer to launching online | Progresiv
The UK operation of German discounter Lidl appears close to entering the eCommerce space after The Grocer reported it was advertising for a digital project manager “to deliver a new online platform with the aim of acquiring new customers and driving online sales”. The hire would be the final key role in the team after eCommerce head Louise Weise was appointed in July 2019.
The parent company has been looking to ramp up on digital in the past year, and recently opened another online store in Slovakia, the latest in a sequence of online moves from the discounter. While the initial focus would be expected to be on its GM Specialbuys, BWS and a small ambient food selection, expansion into eGrocery cannot be ruled out.
Lidl already partners with intermediaries in several European markets and will have been closely watching rival Aldi UK’s first steps into grocery fulfilment in partnership with a local on-demand player. (www.kantarretailiq.com)
