Lidl in Europe: online success, grocery pick-up and sustainability | Progresiv

Research company IGD offers an update on what has happened at Lidl across Europe recently. Lidl in Europe: online success, grocery pick-up and sustainability

Lidl is currently testing grocery pick-up at one of its stores, for orders made on lidl-simpl.be. Home delivery has been available since 2018 in the city of Ghent. Customers will be able to pick-up their orders, in-store, for a fee of 2.99 euros. When entering the store, shoppers scan a barcode to then be able to collect their order from one of the staff members.

Lidl celebrated the first year of its online non-grocery store by announcing it reached 1m orders. More than half of these orders where made from a mobile, confirming the retailer’s digital investments and strategy.

The retailer said one of the most successful items sold on the ecommerce site was the food processor, Monsieur Cuisine, which sold 35,000 units in just 48 hours. Other small appliances including sewing machines and online exclusives, such as furniture and paddle boards, were popular with shoppers.

The ecommerce shop enables Lidl to target new shoppers and compete with other non-grocery retailers. It shows Lidl’s growing omnichannel strategy in Spain and Europe. Lidl recently launched ecommerce in Slovakia and the UK could be the next market to be targeted.

After one of its stores received a BREEAM award in 2017 as the greenest store in the world, Lidl Sweden in October 2019 received an award for its sustainable buildings. Matias Tas, sustainable real estate manager has been named person of the year in the sustainable construction category at the Sweden Green Building Awards.

The award confirms the retailer’s strategy to build future-proof and sustainable stores. According to Thomas Brattlöw, real estate director, the ambition of Lidl Sweden is to become the industry leader in sustainable development. (retailanalysis.igd.com)
