Kaufland Romania launches “Scan&Pay”, a first at group level as well | Progresiv
Kaufland Romania launched the “Scan&Pay” application which allows customers to scan the products with the mobile phone as they put them in their shopping cart, thus eliminating the time spent placing the products on the conveyor and then back in the cart. Thus, the time spent at the check-out is three times shorter - comparative calculations with a normal check-out for an average shopping basket of 15-20 products - from a minute and a half to 30 seconds.
An interesting fact is that this technology is a first not only in Romania, but also for the entire Kaufland group. "We are talking about a pilot project which, based on the results, will be implemented in other stores in the country or in other markets where we are present. We are a great market, open to change and this makes us a good field for experimenting with such applications. Now however we focus on stabilizing the application, the processes, because it is something new for us too, not just the customers. Once we have a clear picture of the impact, of the results, we will see where to expand. The target is nationwide, but we'll probably start with Bucharest and major cities. We will see. We may encounter things that we never thought of”, said Dan Alexe, Director VT Process Organization, Kaufland Romania.
The application is developed by an international partner of Kaufland and can be downloaded from Google Play or AppStore after you've previously connected to the WiFi store. Scanning is done by bringing the phone near the barcode of each product. In the case of fruit and vegetables sold by piece or products from the bakery the label on the shelves is scanned. The purchased quantity must also be introduced. Finally, the application generates a QR code for the entire shopping cart that is presented at the special check-outs. The application also provides access to shopping history. The only required information are name, surname and e-mail.
Kaufland operates a chain of 110 stores in Romania, and in 2015 reported a turnover of 9.2 billion lei, up by 20% over the previous year.
