International sales drive first quarter growth at Carrefour | Progresiv
Carrefour has reported that its total first quarter group sales rose 3.8% to 20.05 billion euros (on a constant currency basis and excl. petrol), as robust growth overseas offset flat sales in its domestic market. . 
On both a total and like-for-like basis, sales in France were unchanged, although the group was up against tough comparisons on the same quarter last year when sales rose 7.9%. The group said that food sales grew in the first quarter for the fourth consecutive year.
Like-for-like sales in its domestic hypermarkets were down 0.6%, whilst sales at supermarkets were up by 0.7%. Like-for-like sales in convenience and other formats rose 1.1%.
Meanwhile, like-for-like sales in Carrefour’s international division rose by 5.3%. Despite the tough trading conditions in the region, like-for-like sales in European countries were up 3.2% with every country it operates seeing growth during the quarter. Like-for-like sales in Spain rose 3.4%, whilst Italy saw growth of 4.5%. Sales in Belgium rose 1.0% on a like-for-like basis and they were also up in Poland and sharply up in Romania.
