HUNGARY: After looming strike, Tesco to raise wages 15% | Progresiv
The Hungarian branch of U.K.-based retail chain Tesco is raising the wages of its employees in the country by 15% on average as of July 1, József Sáling, head of KASZ union said, according to reports. A wage rise of 11%-24% is expected to affect 14,000 non-management staff, Sáling said following talks with the management of Tesco Hungary, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. 
Tesco Hungary will spend approximately 3.5 billion forints (11 million euros) this year to provide its staff “more competitive income”, according to a statement issued by Tesco.
After failed negotiation on wage raises, Tesco employees formed a strike committee and were planning to go on strike, according to reports at the end of March.
By mid-April, the management of Tesco and associated workers’ unions were approaching an agreement on raising the wages of Tesco workers, and Tesco finally promised to raise wages, according to reports. (www.bbj.hu)
