GERMANY: Rewe trialling grocery click and collect | Progresiv
The pilot scheme is being trialled in Fuerstenfeldbruck, Germany, and is the retailers first full grocery Click and Collect offer. Rewe has previously ventured into online, however this has been primarily focused on non-food, with an online beauty shop, wine offer and pet supplies.
In September 2015, the retailer trialled a premium meat offer, 'Beef by Rewe', offering customers the opportunity to order online and collect their meat in-store. This is being trialled in Cologne and the surrounding areas.
The new Click and Collect scheme will cost shoppers two euros, and they will be able to pick up their groceries even when the store is shut. Cooled collection boxes mean that temperature sensitive items can be purchased, opening up the full product range to customers. Another convenient element for shoppers is that payment can be cashless. Customers enter their order number on a screen when picking up their groceries, which then allows them to make a card payment.
Despite online grocery shopping being slow to take off, it is starting to gain traction. This is in part due to the launch of Amazon pantry in October 2015, which has prompted retailers to react and invest more into their online offers. The entry of Amazon has also helped consumers become more accepting of grocery shopping online. (www.igd.com)
