Carrefour has opened a refurbished hypermarket in Villiers-en-Biere, France, showcasing some of its latest capabilities in terms of format innovation. Carrefour trials different store concepts across European markets

The store spanning over 24,000 square meters has four access paths to its key categories: seasonal, home and HBC, market and high-tech.

Food categories have been revamped by elevating customer service around the four specialist counters: fish, deli, bakery, dairy. In-store salmon and meat smokehouses complement a wide bio range.

Non-food categories have been individually elevated through compelling fixtures and layouts. Home improvement, home care, DIY and drug stand out as stores in store.

Fixtures employ a mix of metal, wood and glass to create a comfortable and contemporary ambiance.

Carrefour has opened a new Market supermarket in Saint-Honore, Brussels, Belgium. The store features 800 square meters selling area divided between two floors.

Fresh fruit and vegetables along with a butchery, a fish counter, an in-store baked bread counter are located on the ground floor. The second floor hosts categories such as HBC, beverages and dry food.

An assortment comprising 300 organic products, a selection of world cuisine ingredients and ready-meals. A special emphasis was placed on traditional locally sourced produce to appeal to tourists.

Carrefour is expanding its premium Express format in Spain as part of an effort to capitalize on affluent and high purchasing power shoppers, an area where the retailer feels there is a gap in the market.

The stores span between 150 and 500 square meters and emphasise fresh (600 out of a total 3,700 SKUs in the 160 square meters store) and gourmet (15% of the total assortment for the 500 square meters store) produce.

Jesus Bermeho, Carrefour Spain’s Proximity Director stated the retailer aims for 20% of the new convenience store openings and store conversions to be Premium formats, and opening it to franchising once its profitability is proven. The stores also offer home delivery. (www.kantarretailiq.eu)
