Carrefour to stop selling plastic bags by 2020 | Progresiv
Carrefour will aim to end its distribution of one-time-usage plastic bags at checkouts globally by the year 2020. The company made the announcement at the sustainable development forum COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco. It said that it has been working on the environmental initiative for over a decade now.
Carrefour has already collaborated with the Argentinean government to achieve its zero-bags goal in the country, which will decrease the proliferation of 500 million one-time-usage bags per year.
The retailer's efforts in this field relate to its Consumer Goods Forum commitments, and, though voluntary, are in accordance with UN goals.
Companies like Lidl and Rewe International have pledged to phase out plastic bag usage by 2017. (www.esmmagazine.com)
