Carrefour continues to deploy Supeco in Europe | Progresiv
After Spain and Romania, Carrefour tests its Supeco brand in Italy. An anti-crisis supermarket concept, combining cash and carry and market trade, the opening of this first Supeco, near Milan, was spotted by the Italian site RetailWatch.
Imagined in a Spain in crisis in 2012, the Supeco concept is similar to a supermarket version of the warehouses Atacadão (Carrefour), Assaí (Casino) or Costco. With a higher specialization, obviously, on food.
The brand plays at the same time the map of the fresh products, as well as better cared for than in other supermarkets (fruits and vegetables in refrigerated lock, stand butcher and sausage cutting) and the austerity of the warehouse, with its pallets stored in height on racks and its concrete floor. Prices differ depending on whether the items are purchased on a unit or lot basis (often in the package).
In Spain, the Supeco chain currently counts 14 units. In 2014, the brand appeared in Romania (4 stores to date) and in Brazil (still a single point of sale). France was not considered as a priority to test Supeco.
Italy is therefore a new country in which the distributor wishes to evaluate the potential of the concept. Carrefour Italy, which has already distinguished itself by multiplying the Market "Gourmet", will thus be able to further expand the spectrum of possible customizations of its supermarket format.
It is the cash and carry branch of the distributor, dubbed Docks Market in Italy, which drives the experimentation of Supeco there (the open shop is also taken from the surface of an existing warehouse). It should be said that Docks Market already has the experience accumulated in its three Gross Iper: a concept roughly equivalent to Supeco, on a hyper format, long-standing in the country but never duplicated.
