Carrefour Belgium to trial next-stage biometric payments | Progresiv
Around 800 customers of a Carrefour Express store in the European district of Brussels participated at the beginning of the year in the preparatory phase of the MyFinger project, as shown on the BusinessAm website. Customers have associated their fingerprints to their loyalty card in just a few clicks through a specific tablet in the shop in question. No need to present cash cards, it is a scanner that "decrypts" the digital data. According to Arnaud Lesne, director of innovation at Carrefour Belgium, finger recognition is a quick alternative for those who do not immediately find their bank card or loyalty card. The speed of execution is particularly important in shops in cities that often welcome a more hurried clientele. According to Carrefour, participants were satisfied with this new feature, which was tested for three months.
The supermarket chain is now really starting the test phase. The fingerprint will be linked to a credit card or an account, allowing the customer to pay with his finger at the cashier. The test will take place early next year in a store that has yet to be determined, in the center of Brussels. The technical details of the payment function remain secret for the moment. The question is how Carrefour will link the fingerprint to a bank card and other particularly sensitive data. The chain of stores says that everything will be done under the European legislation on the protection of privacy. (www.gondola.be)
