Auchan Retail has been undergoing significant revenue generation problems in the past couple of years. In 2018, the retailer reported an overall operating loss of 155 million euros, and similar trend is reportedly visible in 2019. According to documents seen by trade journal Lineaires, there is a danger that 2019 will will see Auchan Retail's French hypermarkets - the business' core format - operate at a loss for the first time.
70% of Auchan's French hypermarket estate recorded declining revenue at the start of FY2019. Since then, the retailer has put on hold a renovation project planned for 2020 and 2021 as it struggles to control costs. Since the beginning of 2019, 58% of hypermarkets have continued to experience a decline in sales ranging from flat to -4%. Some stores' sales falls have exceeded this figure. According to the website, this would amount to a loss of 150 million euros in a 10-month period. (www.kantarretailiq.com)
