Tesco, Carrefour reportedly summon suppliers for talks | Progresiv
UK trade paper The Grocer is reporting that Tesco and Carrefour have asked about 30 major brand suppliers to meet in Geneva to discuss “harmonizing rebate terms” once the strategic alliance announced last summer comes into effect.
According to sources, suppliers remain unclear as to what benefits they will see from the deal, despite assurances from the retailers that it will not unduly impact their business.
There are also said to be fears that the alliance is sidestepping the UK Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP) by “threatening a loss of business in a different country, outside the scope of GSCOP,” one supplier is reported as saying. Tesco and Carrefour have stated their partnership will be “in the spirit and to the letter of GSCOP”, despite the rules applying only for sales destined for the UK market. (www.kantarretailiq.com)
