French retailer Carrefour continues its growth on the local market, reporting for the first six months of the year a business of 993 million euros (including VAT), up by 8.1% from the first half of last year, according to the financial report published by the company. In like-for-like terms, the retailer reported a 5.3% gain, which was the best regional performance, rated as "solid growth".
Thus, Carrefour reported business of 11.22 billion euros in Europe (excluding France), down by 1.5% in like-for-like terms. The only markets that recorded increases in the region were Romania and Poland, the latter having only a 0.8% gain in the same store universe, to 1.005 billion euros. Spain, Italy and Belgium had a negative performance, reporting declines of -1.8%, -3.6% and -2.5%, respectively. As for the mother market, Carrefour had a steady evolution, reporting a turnover of 19.20 billion euros.
At Group level, Carrefour reported revenues of 41.43 billion euros in the first six months of the year, up by 1.15% compared to the first half of 2017 and a 0.7% advance like-for-like. The best results were recorded in Latin America, the advance in the region being supported by Argentina, where the retailer picked up a 24.7% advance with the same store universe.
The international press writes about the company's evolution in positive terms, considering that the first semester was like oxygen for the retailer. Obviously, it is still too early to judge the impact of Carrefour's major transformation plan led by Alexandre Bompard, but the performance is listed as a right one.
The Carrefour Group, which operates over 12,000 global stores, ended the financial year with a net turnover of 78.89 billion euros and an operating profit of 2 billion euros. In Romania, the Carrefour chain has 328 stores at the end of the first semester, including 32 Carrefour hypermarkets, 235 supermarkets and 53 convenience stores (Express and Contact).
