Romanian alcohol consumption is 42% below the European average | Progresiv
Romania ranks first in the European Union's illicit alcohol consumption and 42% below the European average in terms of recorded alcohol, according to a statement of Spirits Romania Association.
According to Spirtist Romania representatives, this phenomenon negatively affects both the state, who loses by not collecting taxes, as well as the companies operating legally in the industry, limiting their growth potential, creating new jobs, investment in facilities and severely affecting their local production and export sector competitiveness. In addition, illicit alcohol, whose quality is not controlled in any way, constitutes a serious risk to consumer health and can be life-threatening.
In this regard, the Spirits Romania Association started in collaboration with the National Agency of FiscalAdministration (ANAF) a project to combat the black market within the spirits industry that will consist of prevention and control actions to reduce the production and marketing of illegal alcoholic beverages .
According to the latest data provided by Spirits Romania, the spirits market in Romania is worth about 700 million annually, of which the state collects taxes and excise duties for only 25% of this value.
