ROMANIA: Two-digit sales and profit growth for Lidl | Progresiv
German retailer Lidl registered in Romania a turnover of 5.57 billion lei in 2016 (1.24 billion euros, at a rate of 1 euro = 4.49), an increase of 18% over the previous year, according to the latest data reported to the Ministry of Finance. Also in terms of profit, the company was in the positive area, marking an increase of 26.6% last year, to 171 million lei (48.49 million euros). However, the increase is below the performance achieved last year, when the company's profit almost tripled. Lidl remains the third player in the food retail market after Kaufland and Carrefour. 
In Romania, the Germans currently operate a chain of 211 stores, 9 units more than at the end of 2016.
Lidl is one of the largest chains of stores in Europe, operating in 27 European countries and with more than 140 logistics centers supplying about 10,000 stores. With more than 215,000 employees, Lidl is among the top 10 global traders.
