Romania, the most dynamic market for Penny Market at group level in 2018 | Progresiv
Rewe Romania, the operator of Penny Market discount stores, reported for the financial year 2018 a turnover increase of 14.6% compared to the previous year, when businesses amounted to 2.9 billion lei, according to the financial report published by the company. This is the highest increase for the Penny Market banner at group level.
Overall, the Rewe group's international discount division, which operates in Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, reported a 7.5% increase in revenues for the financial year 2018, up to 4.8 billion euros. The number of stores also increased, by 2.7%, the retailer reaching 1.505 commercial units at the end of the five markets where discount stores operate. At the same time, the German discount division increased its revenue by 3.1%.
At the level of the whole business, Rewe picked up a 4.7 percent advance, to 61.2 billion euros, marking the threshold of 60 billion euros for the first time. "After an increase of 8.5% in 2017, the retail division contributed to the group's financial performance with an advance of 9.1%. The advantages of our retail brands are that we are talking about business with deep roots in the communities and cities we operate in, being in the vicinity of our customers and offering them regional and local products. In addition, the continued expansion of the chain of stores is a key factor in the growth equation", said Lionel Souque, CEO of Rewe Group.
Regarding the supermarket division, the retailer reported a 6.2% growth, to 9.4 billion euros.
Penny Market is one of the most active discounters, being present on the local market since 2005. At present, the chain has 237 stores and 3 logistics centers at Stefăneştii de Jos, Turda and Bacau.
