PepsiCo intends to close UK production plant | Progresiv
PepsiCo has revealed plans to close a production plant in UK, affecting up to 380 jobs. The site in the northeast of UK – used to produce Walkers crisps – is located in Peterlee, County Durham.
The loss of capacity will be absorbed by PepsiCo’s remaining facilities in the UK – in particular a second Walkers crisp factory in Leicester that is the world’s largest facility for the production of crisps. The company operates 11 sites in total in the UK, employing more than 5,000 people.
“The changes we are proposing present significant productivity and efficiency savings crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainable growth of our business in the UK,” said Tracee Foster, the manufacturing director of the Peterlee plant.
And a statement from PepsiCo read: “In order to improve the efficiency of our UK snacks manufacturing operations, we are proposing the closure of our factory at Peterlee. “Crisps currently produced at the site would be manufactured at our other facilities in the UK.
“Peterlee has been an important site for our business but the changes we are proposing present significant productivity and efficiency savings crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainable growth of our business in the UK.”
The company said that it would consult with employees and union representatives before taking a final decision on the site. (www.foodbev.com)
