PepsiCo to acquire SodaStream for 3.2 billion dollars | Progresiv
PepsiCo has announced plans to acquire SodaStream International, giving it significant access to the at-home market.
The deal sees PepsiCo offering 144 dollars per share in cash, a 32% premium to the 30-day volume weighted average price. PepsiCo said it will fund the deal via existing cash reserves.
SodaStream is known for its machine and refillable cylinders, which allow users to make their own soda or carbonated water drinks at home. The company currently distributes products via 80,000 individual retail stores across 45 countries, with its biggest markets being the US, Canada, France, and Germany.
PepsiCo said its “strong distribution capabilities, global reach, R&D, design and marketing expertise, combined with SodaStream’s differentiated and unique product range will position SodaStream for further expansion and breakthrough innovation.” The deal builds on the existing relationship between the two sides, which has seen SodaStream sell caps for Pepsi and Sierra Mist drinks.
Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, said the deal is “an inspired match”, adding that the two sides “can advance our shared vision of a healthier, more-sustainable planet.” Ramon Laguarta, who is set to take over from Nooyi, added: “SodaStream is highly complementary and incremental to our business, adding to our growing water portfolio, while catalyzing our ability to offer personalized in-home beverage solutions around the world.”
Daniel Birbuam, CEO of SodaStream, added: “We are honored to be chosen as PepsiCo’s beachhead for at home preparation to empower consumers around the world with additional choices. I am excited our team will have access to PepsiCo’s vast capabilities and resources to take us to the next level.” Birnbaum will remain with the company once the deal is completed.
