Penny Market diminished its advance on the local market in 2017 | Progresiv
German discounter Penny Market ended 2017 with local sales growth of 6.9%, according to data released by the company. In 2016, the retailer reported a 12.5% increase in revenue compared to the previous year, to 2.86 billion lei, the largest increase reported by the group on the discount division. 
In total, the Rewe group's international discount division, operating in Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, recorded revenues of 4.5 billion euros in 2017, up by 5.4% from 2016.
"The Czech Republic, Italy and Austria are the countries with the highest incomes, but the best dynamic was reported in Hungary, where the increase was 12.2%. The following countries with the best performances are Czech Republic (+ 9.2%) and Romania (+ 6.9%)", the company's financial report shows.
The Penny Market chain, part of Rewe Group, counted a total of 221 stores on the Romanian market at the end of 2017. For 2018, the retailer plans to open 20-25 stores, from the beginning of the year until now 2 commercial units being opened.
