Lidl UK pushes ahead with London expansion | Progresiv
Lidl is set to open five new stores in and around the M25, as it makes slow but steady progress to expand in London.
Over the next two months Lidl will open five new stores in and around the M25: Shepherd's Bush, Walthamstow Central, South Ruislip, Hornchurch and Rosehill.
A new warehouse is also under construction in Luton; this will be Lidl's largest in the UK, and fourth in the Greater London area.
Lidl's board director for expansion and development Ingo Fischer commended "As more London households choose to shop at Lidl we are committed to the continued investment in our operations and infrastructure to support our growth".
In 2015 Lidl first announced its intentions to expand in London, seeking 281 sites within the M25, including central London locations and affluent areas like Chelsea and Mayfair. However, with tough competition for the best sites, the discounter has struggled to grow its presence in the capital.
These new developments are part of Lidl's accelerated investment plans in the UK in 2017 and 2018. Last year Lidl's UK CEO Christian Häärtnagel announced plans to spend 1.45 billion pounds refurbishing existing stores and adding 50-60 new stores per year to its network, alongisde the opening of more distribution centres.
