Constantia Flexibles to close packaging facility in Romania | Progresiv
Constantia Flexibles will close its flexible packaging plant in Romania with the loss of around 90 jobs, the company has confirmed.
The site, in Bucharest, is used to produce plastic film-based flexible packaging for the confectionery and processed food sectors.
The company said that closing the factory would help it to ‘optimise its film-based flexible packaging manufacturing footprint in Europe’. The move is expected to be finalised by July.
Constantia will supplement the loss in capacity, and continue to supply its customers in the confectionery and snack food industries, from three plants in Weiden, Germany; Ankara, Turkey; and Kleszczów, Poland. Its European food division has 12 production sites in eight European countries in all.
Stefan Grote, executive vice-president of Constantia Flexibles Food Europe, said: “We will carry out this closure in a fair and socially responsible way, while at the same time ensuring that our valued customers experience no disruption in supply.
“The transfer of production capacities will also mean we can offer a dedicated plant concept to our customers in the long-term, thus optimising order placement, production scheduling, logistics and quality.”
Earlier this month, Constantia agreed to acquire Italy’s leading dairy lidding company, TR Alucap, for an undisclosed amount.
The deal, Grote said at the time, will help the business strengthen its position in European foil packaging. TR Alucap will join Constantia Flexibles’ dairy business unit, which has a European network of plants producing yogurt lids, banderoles, liquid pouches and stick pack laminates for customers around the world.
As well as its soon-to-be-defunct plant in Bucharest, Constantia also operates a label printing facility in Cluj-Napoca, in northwestern Romania, that specialises in printing labels for beverage bottles, chocolate packaging, and heat sealable caps for plastic and polyurethane cups.
That site will be unaffected by the news of the closure. (www.foodbev.com)
