Carrefour Romania exceeded the 1.5 billion euros threshold in 2016 | Progresiv
Carrefour reported a net turnover of 1.501 billion euros in Romania in 2016, up by 23.5% compared to the year before, when sales of the French amounted to 1.215 billion euros, according to the data published in the financial report.
In the local retail, a single chain of stores has business over this threshold - the Kaufland hypermarket chain. According to the latest financial reports, the Germans from Kaufland reported businesses worth over 2 billion euros for 2015.
For Carrefour, 2016 also represented the completion of the acquisition of 86 Billa supermarkets, the fourth largest transaction in the local retail market, after Mid Europa Partners - Enterprise Investors (the Poles got 533 million euros for the Profi chain), Auchan-Real (the French took over 20 Real hypermarkets) and Lidl - Plus (part of the Schwarz Group, the Germans from Lidl took over the 107 Plus stores). The transaction is estimated at 95-100 million euros and, according to the data presented in the financial report, the budget of 193 million euros which was allocated in 2016 to purchases corresponds primarily to the takeover of the Billa chain, but also several acquisitions in France, especially in the e-commerce sector.
At the end of 2016, Carrefour operated in Romania a chain of 298 stores, including 32 hypermarkets, 213 supermarkets and 53 proximity stores. The retailer inaugurated last year three Carrefour hypermarkets and 13 Market supermarkets.
