Amazon to close pop-up stores | Progresiv
Amazon will close all of its pop-up store locations in the US in April this year. The online retailer is set to discontinue its 87 pop-up retail stores in the US starting next month. These are found in Whole Foods locations, Kohl’s stores and malls throughout the US. The pop-up stores allow customers to try out Amazon’s products and services before they buy including Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers, Echo smart speakers, Amazon Prime Video, Audible and Kindle Unlimited.
Speaking to CNBC, an Amazon spokesperson said: “Across our Amazon network, we regularly evaluate our businesses to ensure we’re making thoughtful decisions around how we can best serve our customers. After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program, and are instead expanding Amazon Books and Amazon 4-star, where we provide a more comprehensive customer experience and broader selection”.
The closing down of its pop-up kiosks highlights how Amazon is re-thinking its strategy around its physical stores. In recent months, we have seen Amazon’s physical presence come to life through the roll out of Amazon Prime Now from Whole Foods stores, the roll out of Amazon Go and launch of Amazon 4-Star, and recent rumours of a new grocery store format opening in the US.
